Scuba divers off the coast of Kiel, Germany, are participating in the SeaStore Seagrass Restoration Project, aiming to restore seagrass meadows in the Baltic Sea to combat climate change. Seagrass meadows act as significant natural carbon sinks, storing more CO2 per square mile than land forests. Due to water quality degradation, these meadows have sharply reduced over the last century, releasing carbon into the atmosphere and accelerating global warming. The project, led by Angela Stevenson from GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research, trains citizens to autonomously replant seagrass shoots more resilient than seeds. The ultimate goal is to re-green the Baltic Sea. While the current approach requires significant effort, the researchers continue to explore new technologies for more efficient restoration. The initiative highlights the importance of nature-based solutions for carbon storage in the fight against climate change.
